Set in Newport Harbor and embraced by the Peninsula are seven jewels: manmade islands that lay
claim to some of the most impressive homes in Southern California.
Balboa Island is the largest and most-visitor friendly of the seven islands. This charming and
delightful island is reached by the only functioning auto ferry in California – (with its three-car
ferryboat) or by a short two-lane bridge from Jamboree Road and Pacific Coast Highway. Marine
and Agate Avenues make up the commercial stretch with an array of cafes, locally owned shops and
boutiques, fine restaurants and the famous sweet treat the Balboa Bar, a decadent vanilla-ice cream
bar dipped in chocolate and smothered with nuts or sprinkles, which originated on this very island.
The six other islands: Collins, Little Balboa Island, Lido Isle, Linda Isle, Harbor Island and
Bay Island, are comprised of some of the most expensive real estate in the country. Linda Isle,
Harbor Island and Bay Island are only accessible by boat and do not allow for cars or vehicles to be
parked on the island. Many of these stunning homes are available as vacation rentals during peak
seasons.
The best way to tour the seven unique islands of Newport Beach is on a 45-minute guided harbor
cruise, or rent your own Duffy electric boat for a self-guided tour. If you’re feeling really
adventurous, kayak your way through each inlet for a heart-pounding start to your vacation. During
the holidays, watch impressive multi-million dollar yachts parade around the harbor and around
each island during the famed Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade, celebrating 100 years in 2008.
Cross over the auto ferry and you’ll land on Balboa Peninsula, another prime spot for visitors to
explore.
