Balboa Peninsula
This three-mile stretch of land, known simply
as the "Peninsula," encompasses one of the
best urban beaches in the United States,
world-famous body-surfing spot "The
Wedge," two scenic piers: Balboa and
Newport Piers, one of the world's largest
small-yacht harbors, the century old
Victorian-style Balboa Pavilion and the Fun
Zone, a miniature Coney-island style
waterfront amusement park.
The Peninsula is the place to get a taste of the
Newport Beach way-of-life. Get in an early
morning surf session, rent and ride bikes down
the boardwalk, stop in one of the local pubs
for a brew and select from a variety of
waterfront eateries. Stay at a charming
boutique hotel or small in and be steps away
from the sand.
Take the auto ferry from Balboa Island and
this lands you right at the Balboa Fun Zone, a miniature amusement park known for its waterfront
Ferris Wheel. Bring the family down for some good old-fashioned fun with rides on the carousel,
take turns on the bungee jump, play in the arcade or explore maritime history at the Newport Harbor
Nautical Museum. Get out on sea and explore Newport Harbor on an electric Duffy Boat, kayak or
paddle boat, with rental locations next to the Fun Zone.
At the southern most end of the Peninsula you'll find "The Wedge" – known as one of the toughest
body boarding spots in the world where waves can get up to 20 feet high Body boarders can't get
enough of it and spectators love to watch from on-shore. Some say this is where Hollywood legend,
John Wayne got his movie career started, due to a body boarding injury.
