Hotel Gym/Workout Roundup
When you’re staying in one of Newport Beach’s resorts, you’ll find that you often don’t even have to leave the grounds to get fit … but, if you do, there also are plenty of outdoor exercise options as well! From wellness classes to primo fitness facilities and more, there are plenty of ways to exercise your right to work out at some of our best local hotels.
At the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach, you’ll find the fully renovated 24 Hour StayFit Gym. Updated as part of an overall $15 million property-wide redesign, the top-of-the-line fitness facility overlooks the resort’s lush, tropical landscape and features treadmills, elliptical machines, recumbent bikes, exercise cycles, free weights, weight stations, exercise mats, and resistance bands and balls. A fitness concierge even is on hand to help with any gear you may need. If you choose to work out in the privacy of your own room, you can order a complete yoga workout from the in-room entertainment unit. Various programs are available, including fitness, stress reduction and mental focus. And, for those who prefer to exercise outdoors, the fitness concierge can supply detailed maps of running and walking trails (the nearby Newport Bay Ecological Reserve is great for jogging and walking), as well as GPS watches, or offer directions to the hotel’s nine-hole, par-three Back Bay Golf Course; 16 lighted tennis courts; and three new outdoor swimming pools and hot tubs. Bike rentals and activities such as shuffleboard and volleyball also are available.
Island Hotel Newport Beach Fitness Center
You’ll find another recently revamped gym at the Island Hotel Newport Beach. Redone to better meet guests’ needs, the facility now offers brand-new, state-of-the-art cardio and weight machines — including treadmills, ellipticals, ascent trainers, bikes, a climbmill, MyRide VX (interactive spin bike with coach) — as well as free weights and varied strength training equipment. Fitness professionals are available by appointment for group programs and individual personal training sessions, with each program incorporating a variety of activities tailored to all fitness levels. You also can visit the concierge desk to pick up jogging maps routes of varying degrees of difficulty through nearby neighborhoods, beaches and parklands, or go for a swim at the property’s 3,000-square-foot heated outdoor pool.
At the waterfront Balboa Bay Resort, you can work out with a personal trainer or choose from several wellness classes including Pilates mat and reformer classes, yoga and water aerobics ($20 per class). Want to go it on your own? Head to the 24-hour fitness center (available exclusively to resort guests ages 16 years old and above). There you’ll find modern equipment from Precor and Paramount, including three treadmills, an elliptical, and a stationary bike; weight machines for leg extensions, lats/rows, butterfly/chest and biceps; as well as a selection of free weights, steps, exercise balls and mats for stretching and yoga. You also can participate in a range of outdoor activities, with kayaks and paddleboards available for rent.
