First and foremost, Newport Beach is open and welcoming visitors! Our hotels, restaurants, shops and attractions are ready to welcome you!
As Southern California experiences an unusual combination of ocean and weather conditions, here are five key findings:
1️⃣ El Niño doesn’t mean endless rain. There’s still plenty of Southern California sunshine to enjoy this winter!
2️⃣ Our tides are predictable. Scientists can forecast astronomical tides years in advance. Upcoming peak high tide windows: November 23–27, December 22–26 and January 20–24.
3️⃣ Peak high tides alone don’t tell the whole story. When elevated ocean levels and powerful surf coincide, coastal flooding risks increase. Forecasting these conditions helps communities prepare in advance.
4️⃣ High tide doesn’t last all day. Water levels typically peak for a few hours before receding, although flooding impacts can linger.
5️⃣ These aren’t typical coastal conditions. We’re experiencing a combination of ocean and weather factors that don’t occur every winter.
