The Lido Theater is an iconic art deco movie theater that originally opened in 1939. Meticulously restored in recent years, the landmark Lido Theater features a new, state-of-the-art projection and sound system, yet maintains an air of Old Hollywood glamour. Movie-goers will notice the vintage ticket booth and poster cases, art deco architectural details, a balcony, and Catalina-style tilework, revered at the time for its colorful hand painted beauty, and rarely seen today.
Other special features include the auditorium walls, with stunning murals depicting underwater ocean scenes that appear to glow from black lights illuminating the walls when the house lights dim. There is also a sitting parlor in the ladies restroom downstairs that was originally built at the request of Oscar-winning actress Bette Davis, who lived in Corona del Mar when the theater was under construction. Also at Davis’ request, the first regular showing at The Lido Theater was the Pulitzer Prize-winning adaptation of The Old Maid, starring Davis and Miriam Hopkins.
