An Unmatched Experience

Visit Newport Beach and Atomic Ballroom Achieved GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ Title for World’s Largest Swing Dance Lesson

April 20, 2026 (Newport Beach, Calif) — Visit Newport Beach and Atomic Ballroom made history on Sunday, April 19, 2026, when 1,158 dancers (579 pairs) gathered at Peninsula Park at the base of the Balboa Pier to break the Guinness World Records™ title for the World’s Largest Swing Dance Lesson. The existing record of 782 attendees was shattered as participants from Newport Beach and communities far beyond joined in a free, 30-minute swing dance lesson led by multi-national-championship dancers from Atomic Ballroom.

The event was rooted in Newport Beach’s deep cultural history as the birthplace of the Balboa Swing, the iconic dance style born on the city’s shores in the 1930s. This year, Visit Newport Beach is celebrating the city’s 120th anniversary by honoring each decade throughout the year. April’s festivities paid tribute to the swinging 1930s and the vibrant dance culture that put Newport Beach on the map.

“Thanks to our fiercely dedicated and enthusiastic community, history was made in Newport Beach today. Over 1,000 people, from our home turf and cities far beyond, gathered at the base of the Balboa Pier to honor the Balboa Swing, the iconic dance born right here on these shores. Together, we didn’t just meet the challenge — we shattered it,” said Ashley Johnson, SVP and Chief Marketing Officer, Visit Newport Beach. “Visit Newport Beach and Atomic Ballroom are now Guinness World Records™ holders for the World’s Largest Swing Dance Lesson at 579 pairs. The Rendezvous Room may be gone, but its spirit danced with every single one of us today. We are endlessly grateful to this community for showing up, showing out, and writing the next chapter of Newport Beach history.”

Open to the public and free of charge for participants ages 13 and up, the event required no prior dance experience. Professional instructors from Atomic Ballroom guided the crowd through the lesson, bringing Newport Beach’s storied dance legacy to life for a new generation.
