⚓️GIVEAWAY⚓️ To celebrate a piece of Newport Beach history, we’re partnering with @duffyelectricboats for a special giveaway!
What started as one person’s innovative idea became one of Newport Beach’s most iconic experiences.
In 1969, Marshall “Duffy” Duffield set out to create a more reliable way to enjoy the harbor after growing frustrated with repeated boat breakdowns. Using parts from a used golf cart, he built the first Duffy electric boat, and by 1970, the first Duffy was sold.
That innovation forever changed Newport Harbor. Today, it’s estimated that Duffy boats make up nearly 30% of the harbor’s 9,000 vessels, helping earn Newport Beach its reputation as the electric boating capital of the world.
On July 11, 1998, the City of Newport Beach officially recognized that impact by issuing a proclamation honoring Duffy Electric Boats for their contributions to the harbor and the advancement of electric boating.

The 6th decade of the 20th century was a decade that saw the addition of what are now some of Newport Beach’s signature landmarks and attractions! 🤍
Here are four things to know about Newport Beach in the 1960s:
1. In 1967, Fashion Island opened and put Newport Beach on the map as a shopping destination. The new retail center debuted with 56 stores and two restaurants. Today, it has three times as many stores and more than 30 dining options.
2. In the early 1960s, the 410-room Newporter Inn—now the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach—opened on Upper Newport Bay, bringing a new level of luxury accommodations that attracted vacationers, business travelers, conventioneers, and high-profile guests like President Richard Nixon.
3. The early 1960s also saw the invention of the beloved Balboa Bar—a frozen vanilla ice cream bar on a stick that’s freshly dipped in chocolate and rolled in the toppings of your choice. The Balboa Bar has become a favorite treat of residents and visitors alike, and no visit to Newport Beach is complete without sinking your teeth into this local confectionery classic.
4. For decades, the beach in West Newport often washed away during major storms, resulting in the loss of oceanfront homes and making beach outings impossible on that end of town. But in the 1960s, a series of finger jetties were constructed to replenish the sand and widen the beach by more than a football field, creating one of the best stretches of sand on the mainland for beach lovers.
