4 Ways to Celebrate the Start of Spring
Monday, March 20, marks the first day of spring and we couldn’t be happier! After a long winter and lots of rain, we’re eager for some sunshine and outdoor fun. So in honor of the season change, we’ve rounded up four ways to celebrate spring in Newport Beach. From hiking through the wildflower super bloom to boating on the bay, these activities will surely help you soak up the sunshine and enjoy the scenery of our beautiful city.
Witness the Wildflowers
Newport Beach is home to some of SoCal’s most beautiful wildflowers. For nature enthusiasts looking to soak up the sights and smells of these natural wonders, there are a few places worth exploring. One of the most popular is the Back Bay, which boasts stunning views of the sea and is home to an array of wildflowers, including California poppies, lupines and wild roses. Another great option is Crystal Cove State Park, which boasts over 2,400 acres of protected wilderness and a breathtaking array of native blooms. During the spring, we also love exploring Sherman Library & Gardens, a 2.2-acre garden home to various native and exotic plant species.
Take a Bike Ride
In search of a wheely good time? Explore Newport Beach by bike! With miles of bike paths that wind along the stunning coastline, you can soak up the sun, enjoy a sea breeze and take in the sights and sounds of our coastal town. Start your journey at the Balboa Pier and cruise down the boardwalk, passing by surfers, sunbathers and street performers. Head down the Balboa Peninsula and take a break at one of the many beachfront cafes or bars, where you can enjoy a refreshing drink or snack while admiring the ocean view. There are also several bike rental companies local to the area, including 20th Street Beach and Bikes, Seaside Bike Rentals and Pedego Electric Bikes.
Set Sail on the Bay
One of the most popular activities in Newport Beach, boating is a great way to get out on the water and savor the sunshine. Hop aboard an electric boat this spring with friends, or spend a day at sea on a sailboat from Newport Sailing Charters. Whale watching is also a popular spring activity, and gray whales are often spotted between the months of December through April. If it’s the perfect date night you’re after, book a gondola cruise at sunset with Gondola Adventures, Inc. for a romantic evening on the water with your sweetheart.
Dine Alfresco
With one of the largest recreational harbors on the West Coast, it’s no surprise Newport Beach boasts several picturesque spots for seaside dining. Whether you’re in the mood for fresh seafood, a farm-to-table brunch or tasty Mexican cuisine, there are plenty of open-air restaurants that will please your palate and give you a full dose of vitamin sea. Head to the historic Newport Landing for a classic bayside dining experience, where you can enjoy a cold beer and a plate of fish and chips. Or, indulge in some fine dining at The Cannery, Nobu Newport Beach, The Winery Restaurant & Wine Bar or Louie’s By the Bay. For a more casual experience, grab a table at The Crab Cooker, a local institution that has been serving up sensational seafood since 1951.
