A Beach Family’s Guide to the Perfect Newport Beach Weekend

family on beach

Newport Beach is the perfect place to slow everything down – salt air, warm sun, and the peaceful sound of waves. For families who love the beach, this stretch of Southern California coastline delivers the kind of weekend that everyone actually enjoys. Whether your crew is into surfing, hiking, or simply spending uninterrupted time together by the water, this three-day itinerary has you covered.

Day 1: Friday – Arrive & Settle Into Beach Life

Start the weekend by checking in and letting the ocean set the tone. Families have plenty of great options for where to stay in Newport Beach, but Balboa Bay Resort is hard to beat. Located along the Newport Harbor coastline, the resort offers water sport rentals, stunning harbor views, and an on-property spa — everything you need without having to go far.

Once you’re settled, take a walk along the shoreline, scope out the beach for tomorrow, and grab a waterfront dinner nearby. Enjoy a low-key first evening of your getaway.

Before bed, consider winding down at The Spa at Balboa Bay Resort. With access to the sauna, cold plunge, and a full menu of treatments, it’s a great way to reset after a travel day.

Day 2: Saturday – Surf, Paddleboard & Play in the Water

Spend your first full day soaking up the sun and ocean. Newport Beach has several family-friendly, distinct beaches worth a visit.

Corona del Mar State Beach is known as one of the best beaches in Newport Beach. The beach is well-suited for surfing, with calmer coves for beginners and enough wave action to keep more experienced surfers engaged. Pirates Cove is a good pick if your family wants something a little more exploratory. There are sea caves to check out that kids and teens tend to love. It’s also a great place for swimming due to the protective jetties lining the harbor entrance.

After surfing or exploring, rent paddleboards or kayaks from 20th Street Beach and Bikes for a more relaxed afternoon on the water. Wrap up the day with dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants along the Balboa Peninsula with good food, ocean views, and an easy wind-down before one more day in Newport Beach.

Day 3: Sunday – Hiking Crystal Cove & a Newport Beach Bonfire

Spend the morning at Crystal Cove State Park, which offers over 2,400 acres of coastal wilderness and trails for all levels. Some routes hug the bluffs, offering wide ocean views; others wind through inland terrain. It’s a natural, unhurried way to spend a Sunday morning and a great way to spend time together surrounded by nature.

After the hike, head back to the beach for a final afternoon in the sun before closing out the weekend with a bonfire. Many of Newport Beach’s beaches have designated fire rings, making it easy to pull off without much planning. Roast s’mores, recap the weekend, and take your time on the way home.

Plan Your Newport Beach Family Getaway

Newport Beach is an easy drive from both Los Angeles (about an hour) and only minutes from John Wayne Airport, Orange County (SNA). Whether you’re planning ahead or booking last-minute, Newport Beach is the kind of destination that’s always worth it. Your best family beach vacation starts here.
