Dessert Lab Cheesecake (The Dessert Lab Facebook)The Dessert Lab

This dessert shop debuted in 2014 and features light grey walls, small white tables, wall-mounted menus complete with “lab notes,” and a tantalizing display case loaded with cupcakes and cheesecakes. Cheesecakes come in petit and three-inch sizes. Depending on the season, flavors might include pistachio, strawberry, black velvet, and PB&J.

The Beachcomber

This palm-shrouded Crystal Cove hangout features a standout wood deck with white umbrellas, views of crashing waves, and a palapa topped tiki bar. Their wood-lined dining room contains cushioned booths and a beam that warns customers to “Watch yer Noggin!” The Beachcomber closes the culinary show with Butter Cake, a sponge cake that’s soaked with tres leches and topped with whipped cream, fresh berries, bananas, salty Marcona almonds, and a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Canaletto Ristorante

Il Fornaio’s sister restaurant at Fashion Island features chef Moises Mendoza in the kitchen and food in the style of Venice, Italy. The stately space features a long marble bar, fashionable wood rafters, disc-shaped lanterns, and a pleasant covered patio warmed with a fireplace. For dessert, they produce popular soffiato al cioccolato, a warm hazelnut and almond cake served with caramel sea salt gelato.

Sweet Lady Jane Cake (Sweet Lady Jane)Sweet Lady Jane

This L.A. bakery and café from Jane Lockhart now has a branch in Corona del Mar. The space features a faded yellow smooth-coat stucco façade with planter front and pleasant side patio. Sweet Lady Jane has a varied menu, but is best known for cakes. More than 20 cakes are available by the slice, divided between Yellow Cakes, Chocolate Cakes, and Additional Flavors. Especially compelling options include Dulce de Leche, Passion Fruit with Apricot, and Seven Layer Mocha, since six layers just aren’t enough.

Hyatt Regency Newport Beach Lobby Lounge

This casual hangout is located inside the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach, a relaxing property near Newport Beach’s Back Bay. The space features high-top tables, a full bar, bucket chairs and comfortable couches. Their lounge menu stars craveable comfort foods like carne asada fries and dry-aged burgers. They finish strong with gooey butter cake enriched with salted caramel and cream cheese.

Susan Sarich has built a SoCal empire on gourmet versions of childhood classics. Her Westcliff outpost features white and aqua walls, limited patio seating, and a wealth of pastry cases and pedestals, all filled with cupcakes, full-scale cakes, and other sweets. Popular cakes include tropical coconut, luscious lemon, and Southern red velvet. SusieCakes also features a seasonal cake very month. For November, it was cranberry orange cake. December brings chocolate candy cane cake.

Sam & Harry’s

Located across the street from Fashion Island, Sam & Harry’s resides inside the Newport Beach Marriott. This steakhouse features a bar area with striped wood flooring, drum shaped lanterns and high-top marble tables. The dining room is even classier, with white clothed tables and red-backed banquettes. Key lime cheesecake and molten chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream are both available during lunch and dinner.

Fleming's Chocolate Lava Cake (Fleming's)Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar

Paul Fleming and Bill Allen debuted Fleming’s at Fashion Island in 1998. If you have room after a dry-aged ribeye or New York strip, choose between two cakes. Executive chef Russell Skall created a Chocolate Lava Cake featuring cascading Belgian chocolate in the middle, berries and mint up top, and a big scoop of vanilla ice cream sprinkled with chopped pistachios. Fleming’s also makes a three-layer carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and a drizzle of dark rum caramel sauce.

Waterline

This Balboa Bay Resort restaurant features white clothed tables, rustic rope-like chairs, and a patio with prized views of Balboa Bay and passing yachts. Waterline serves several different cakes for dessert, including warm chocolate molten cake with espresso ganache, coffee anglaise, and candied hazelnut; PB&J – peanut butter cheesecake with concord sorbet and pulled brittle; and pineapple upside down cake with toasted coconut ice cream and a macadamia nut tuile. With three compelling choices like these, your decision comes down to personal preference. Or you can just order a cake trio.
