It’s Fall, ya’ll! And when you think of comfort food, what comes to mind? Something hearty, delicious, warm, perhaps with lots of carbs? Yes! With the weather turning slightly cooler here in the OC, it seems only fitting to recommend hearty Italian pastas and Asian noodles to warm you up. Check out some of our favorite places to satiate your carb craving in Newport Beach!
The self-proclaimed “World Class Crazy Ones,” are aiming to do something extraordinary with their gifts and talents, and boy do they bring it! Their menu offers Italian classics like Cheryl’s Gnocchi or, you can build your own! If you decide to DIY your pasta dish, be adventurous with the Original Mama D pink sauce or for a spicy palette, the Fra Diavolo marinara. Add veggies and protein (chicken, meatball, sausage, calamari, bay scallops, shrimp, etc.) to perfectly customize your meal.
Okay NB Dine Blog, I love Italian noodles, but I’m craving something heavy on the broth side, filled with vermicelli noodles and thin slices of beef. Lotus Bistro makes different flavorful variations of the classic Vietnamese dish, pho, in addition to a whole section of the menu titled, “Vermicelli – Noodle Dishes.” So, if you’re not in the mood for a bowl of pho but still feeling noodle-y, you know where to look. The robust menu is sure to satisfy all discerning guests!
Awarded ‘Restaurant of the Year’ by OC Register’s food critic, Sapori is a shoe-in for our list! Sapori has been twirling up authentic Italian dishes from 1989 and has an impressive, well curated menu to prove it. The Farfalle al Salmone is a beautiful dish made with bow-tie pasta, fresh salmon and a tomato cream sauce that sounds simple but is exploding with flavor. If you’re looking for something heavier and heartier (because after all, it is Fall), you must try the Sedanini al Ragu di Agnello- a Sedanini pasta dish served in a rich lamb ragu sauce. Delizioso!
Is this a real pasta list without the OSF? If you’re in the go big or go home mentality we suggest ordering the Taste of Italy platter fit for royalty with dishes of lasagna and fettuccine alfredo. If that’s not a noodle fix, we don’t know what is! Actually, there are so many delicious noodles on the menu it might be hard to decide, but we always recommend the flavorful meat sauce made from their 1969 homemade recipe of ripe tomatoes and ground beef sautéed with onions, celery and garlic. The slow simmered sauce topped over spaghetti is a mouthwatering winner.
Modo Mio, or ‘my way’ in Italian, brings an innovative dining experience to chefs Phil and Linda Crowley’s Northern Italian restaurant. Dishes are beautifully curated and thoughtfully crafted to eat with your eyes first, and then to indulge in the decadent flavors of the rustic Italian dishes on your palette. Their signature Bolognese sauce is made with ground beef, pork and marinara served over fresh tagliatelle pasta. If you love your pasta stuffed, order the Zucca, a fresh made ravioli filled with butternut squash and ricotta sautéed in butter, sage and parmesan. Talk about a flavor party in your mouth!
Nancy Silverton’s love letter to California ingredients is Pizzeria Mozza. With a unique aesthetic to cooking, focused on unfussy, straightforward and always uncompromising creations, it’s no wonder Pizzeria Mozza made the list. The menu is impressive and the pasta list is an ode to classics using the freshest ingredients available. You can never go wrong with the spaghetti cacio e pepe as it is so, so good you might just have to order two. Noodle perfection at its finest!
