NEWPORT BEACH blog

An Unmatched Experience

Back to Basics

Since 2008, Newport Beach’s style savviest women have coasted down to nearby Laguna to meet all of their closet needs under one wooden shingle roof. Owned and curated by surf industry design doyens Dana Marron and Laura Hart, Laguna Supply houses apparel basics from brands like Mother denim, Rag & Bone and Isabel Marant. Inspired by its buyers’ love for both travel and supporting local artisans, the boutique carries trends from as far as Beirut as well as nearby Newport Beach — where it’s recently opened a second location in Corona del Mar (look for the sunny yellow door and matching potted plants). In addition to “effortless” wardrobe staples, you’ll find fun accessories like delicate gold and gemstone jewels from Zoey Hart and footwear essentials from Beek, plus classic leather handbags, pack-everywhere scarves and iconic fashion books. Newport Beach exclusives also give Laguna ladies a reason to travel northward now. Here, Marron shares her own fashion inspiration and rules of style.

What’s in a name: We figured if ‘Laguna Supply’ showed up on the wives’ credit card statements, it could be anything — lumber, paint, house supplies. I am sure [the husbands] are onto us now.

Your style, in a phrase: Casual and bohemian — with a twist.

Southern exposure: I grew up outside of Houston, [among] a melting pot of people who also worked in the space industry like my dad. My mom was a model and had a surf shop. The Gulf felt more like California than Texas, and had a lot of influence on my style.

Signature item: I’m a stripe-a-holic. A good striped shirt is my go-to.

You never leave home without: A good bag. I’m currently carrying a reversible, three-in-one tote by Ampersand as Apostrophe. It has a removable pouch that I use as a clutch at night.

Summer trends you’re wearing: I love caftans. Shower-slide sandals. Bright, beautiful colors in cotton. I’m obsessed with anything gold — multiple necklaces, stacked rings.

Style icon: Charlotte Gainsbourg. There’s always a bit of a twist to her simple, chic and effortless style. It’s classic but never boring.

Five Newport Beach essentials: 1) A beautiful leather sandal (Marron’s picks: Beek and Ancient Greek). You can have a great outfit, but with the wrong shoes — nope, you’re done. 2) Something gold. 3) A go-to cotton dress, in a print or solid. It’s that thing can you throw on and go, and dress up or down. Cotton is perfect because it doesn’t wrinkle. 4) A packable scarf — you’ll need the layer by the beach. 5) A Panama hat. 6) A beach towel (Marron’s favorite is by OC-based Ruby Mint).

What it means to be “stylish”: It’s ageless, effortless and confident. It’s finding your own style, believing in it and going with it.

Less is more: You don’t need a lot of things, just the right things. Build a foundation — a pair of jeans, a cotton dress and a white that shirt that fit you perfectly, a stylish sandal, a great bag — and add trends to this. Buy well, not often.

Trending: Shopping with a friend or at one boutique where you’ll get an honest opinion. The beauty of a small boutique — any small boutique — is the relationship and perk of a “personal shopper” who isn’t working on commission. We want you to only wear what you look great in and what feels comfortable and gets you compliments. We want our customers — our friends — to come back.

Yoga pants are for yoga class: I’m a firm believer that becoming a mom shouldn’t change your style. Stain-resistant cotton is your friend, but you don’t need to wear yoga pants all day. Motherhood should enhance who you are, never changing your style.
