Indoor Habitué
Friday
Evening: Check in. Enjoy a light, healthy meal and restful evening at your seaside resort as you prepare for a weekend of invigorating activity.
Saturday
8:00 a.m.: Rise and shine! Slip into your favorite pair of leggings from Australia brand Lorna Jane, do some gentle stretching on your beach-front balcony or veranda, get energize by that salty ocean air, and be ready for a full day of wellness.
9:00 a.m.: Breakfast at Zinc Café
You’ll need a light, healthful breakfast to fuel your morning. Offering an array of delicious dishes from fresh fruit and house-made granola to scrambled egg whites and breakfast burritos, Zinc is the perfect place to wake up. Dine on the outdoor patio, eat slowly, and enjoy a little java jolt with house coffee or espresso (while the lattes here are divine, they might leave you feeling a bit heavy)
10:30 a.m.: The Split class at Defy Gravity
This hour-long class combines 30 minutes of hardcore cardio Spin followed by 30 minutes of strengthening and lengthening Pilates on the reformer. In a cool, dimly lit room, you’ll get your heart pumping with an intense bike workout accompanied by energizing tunes. Next, you’ll strength-strain every muscle with a series of exercises on the machines under the guidance, and with the help of your instructor. Bring a face towel and water bottle (I like the Klean Kanteen bottle from Whole Foods Market.)
Noon: Lunch at Provenance
Executive Chef Cathy Pavlos infuses her napa-inspired dishes with fresh herbs and vegetable ingredients straight from her 1,300-square-foot organic raised-bed garden. Her cooking philosophies have always included using the best produce, healthy ingredients and humanely raised meats and wild seafood to give the diner an unparalleled experience. After ordering a delicious appetizer such as Clipped Garden Lettuces or the Garden Beets, order sides in the “From the Garden” section to go along with your entrée. You won’t go wrong with the Charred Broccoli or Shaved Brussels Sprouts.
2:30 p.m.: After lunch, take a cat nap! Just 20 minutes of snoozing has been shown to restore energy and cognitive function, and will help you feel refreshed.
4:00 p.m.: Vinyasa Flow at YogaWorks
Your body needs time to recover from this morning’s workout, so you’ll use this class to calm your mind, find balance, and stretch. Choose a level-one instructor who won’t incorporate postures that are too challenging for sore muscles. And listen to your body — go at your own pace. Mats are provided if you don’t have your own. Bring a water bottle.
5:30 p.m.: Take in some fresh air and connect with nature as you enjoy an easy stroll along the coast, be it toes in the sand, along a boardwalk, or path.
7:00 p.m.: Dinner at Cannery Seafood of The Pacific
Enjoy an epic California sunset over the water as you unwind for the evening. Sample a variety of fresh seafood fare with a tier platter — offering oyster, shrimp, sushi and more.
9:00 p.m.: Turn in. You’ll be up early for another hardcore workout.
Sunday
6:45 a.m.: Start the day with a light green juice from Juice Crafters on Balboa Island.
8:00 a.m.: Class at The Bar Method
Strengthen, sculpt, and align with this intense one-hour workout. Performed beside a mirror and ballet bar as well as on a mat, this class includes isometric exercise, weight lifting, and stretching to work and tone every muscle in your body. Bring a water bottle and a face towel.
9:30 a.m.: Breakfast at Le Pain Quotidien
Reward yourself with a healthy and hearty breakfast from this quaint French-style eatery at Fashion Island. Try the seasonal Organic Egg Frittata served with green salad or the Smoked Salmon Breakfast with soft-boiled egg, ricotta cheese, and herbs. If you went strong and burned a lot of calories during that morning fitness class, treat yourself to a soy latte.
11:00 a.m.: Book an appointment at Spa Gregorie’s
It’s time to relax and get pampered — mental health is a key component to overall wellness. Sometimes we forget how important it is to eliminate stress from our lives, and a day at the spa is the perfect antidote. If muscles are tender, try the Sports Massage; deep stroking methods and special stretching movements soothe tired muscles. This spa also offers a full-body and facial massage called the Fassage, which allows you to enjoy two treatments in one session without having to switch rooms. It begins with a full-body massage followed by a face massage and express facial, which cleanses, purifies, and hydrates skin.
1:30 p.m.: Lunch and relaxation at your resort
Head back to the hotel for seaside room service. Wile away the afternoon lounging by the pool — or squeeze in an extra workout with some laps!
