What to Look Forward to in August

July 28, 2023

Can you believe it’s almost August?! We’re nearing summer’s halfway point, but there’s still a lot to experience this season in Newport Beach. Aside from popular activities like boating, beachin’ and waterfront dining, we’ve rounded up six noteworthy happenings to add to your August calendar. From Sherman Library & Gardens’ annual Summer Garden Party to the grand opening of Newport Beach’s newest Baja-inspired restaurant, Palmilla Cocina y Tequila, you’re in for a month of exciting new experiences!

Summer Art Classes at the Balboa Island Museum

Tap into your artistic side this August! The Balboa Island Museum is hosting a series of summer art classes taught by local Laguna Beach artist Eve Nycz. In these hands-on classes, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the techniques of famous artists like Marc Chagall, Winslow Homer, René Magritte and more. These classes will take place on Wednesdays from 10-11 a.m. and are donation-based. To reserve your spot, click here!

Grand Opening of Palmilla Cocina y Tequila

In case you missed it, Palmilla Cocina y Tequila is now open and already dazzling diners with its vibrant Mexican flavors, wow-worthy design (check out the retractable roof!) and buzzy, indoor-outdoor ambiance. This new Balboa Peninsula restaurant officially opened its doors on July 27, bringing modern interpretations of traditional Sonoran-style Mexican cuisine to Newport Beach. Grab a seat at the luminous bar top for a muddled fresh fruit margarita or get cozy in one of the booths and sink your teeth into inventive dishes like the sizzling filet mignon fajitas, ceviche trio or halibut tacos. It’s safe to say Palmilla is here to stay!

Makers in the Zone

Every Thursday of the month, the historic Balboa Fun Zone hosts Makers in the Zone—a local artisan market full of food vendors, locally made goods and more. Mark your calendar for August 3, and come shop locally from 5:30-9 p.m. Guests can look forward to live musical performances while they shop everything from home goods and decor to apparel and handcrafted accessories! For this specific event, Makers in the Zone is also collaborating with The Female Makers Market to connect with and showcase the work of amazing female makers in Orange County.

Summer Garden Party at Sherman Library & Gardens

Set on 2.2 acres in Corona del Mar, Sherman Library & Gardens is a flourishing horticultural oasis that comes alive in the summertime. And this month, Sherman Library & Gardens’ Volunteer Association is bringing the bloom with a Summer Garden Party fundraiser on August 26 from 4-7 p.m. Guests of this event will enjoy a garden party hat contest, a bouquet bar, a delicious supper prepared by Executive Chef of 608 Dalia Jessica Roy, a silent auction and raffle and live music by David Aguiar and ‘The Garden Party Players’ in the Central Garden! To purchase tickets, click here!

Rosé Soirée at Topside Roof Deck

Newport Beach’s only rooftop bar, Topside, is a stellar spot to catch a sunset and sip on a summer cocktail. But if you prefer wine over cocktails, you won’t want to miss Topside’s Rosé Soirée on August 2! Taking place from 2-4 p.m., this mid-week event will feature wines from DAOU Winery, along with tasty bites (think avocado tostadas and Wagyu beef sliders), live performances, a DJ set and more. Don’t forget to capture memories with Topside’s 360 camera!

Wine Walk at the Environmental Nature Center

If you love long walks with a glass of wine in hand, join the Environmental Nature Center and Hi-Time Wine Cellars for a Wine Walk on August 12 from 4-7 p.m.! Attendees will have the opportunity to stroll through the center, stop at wine-tasting stations along the trails, snack on small bites and enjoy live music! End your walk by the fire pit, where you can enjoy more live music by Vitaminz while savoring a cup of Kean Coffee and dessert. The best part: Ticket sales will support environmental education at the ENC!
