An Unmatched Experience

Seven Ways to show Dad He’s the Best this Father’s Day

What do you get for the guy who cheered you on from the sidelines at soccer games, gave you a standing ovation at ballet recitals, and attended every school play, even if you were just in the chorus line? It’s hard to repay the time, love and never-ending patience your Dad has shown throughout the years with a gift on Father’s Day, but it’s a good place to start. And if you remember how much it meant to you just for him to be there at those games and recitals, take a page out of his book and give him something only you can give: your time! Whatever your Dad’s interests, here are a few ways to show him you think he’s the best with these fun things to do together in Newport Beach this Father’s Day.

1 Set Sail

Already know the ropes when it comes to sailing a boat? Then rent your craft of choice and spend the morning with Dad sailing past Newport Beach’s stunning coastline. Check out the list of rentals available in Newport Beach here.

If you and Dad are new to the sport, book an introductory lesson, or spend some quality time together and plan to take a multi-day course so you’ll be ready to captain your own ship. The Newport Beach Sailing School offers private and semi-private lessons. Not only have they won the award for the Outstanding Sailing School of the Year several times, but two of its instructors were honored with the American Sailing Association’s (ASA) Outstanding Sailing Instructor of the Year award for 2016, so you know you’re in good hands. The school offers classes in keelboats, sailboats and catamarans, and all boats are built in 2005 or later, which means you will be learning on the most up-to-date electronics and instrumentation.

Orange Coast College’s School of Sailing and Seamanship offers beginning sailing courses in the Newport Bay; you’ll be breezing by Lido and Balboa Island in no time on one of the school’s 14 dinghies. Once you pass the beginner course, move on to a cruising course, or if you have the need for speed, try the racing clinic.

2 Cruise along Newport Coast in Dad’s Dream Car

So maybe you can’t go out and buy your Dad a Lamborghini Huracán Coupé with a V10 and 602 hp, but you could rent him one for the day. Enterprise’s exotic car collection in Newport Beach offers Aston Martins down to Teslas, so you can definitely find something that Dad will get excited about. Especially once he gets behind the wheel, revs the engine and races (safely and within the speed limit, of course) down the Pacific Coast Highway.

Father's Day Car Show at Balboa Bay Resort3 Attend a Father’s Day Car Show

If Dad’s favorite car isn’t available for rent, perhaps he could get lucky and find it at one of two car shows in Newport Beach this coming Sunday. Even if the car is not for sale, he could at least bask in the glow of its beauty. The 11th annual Father’s Day car show at the Balboa Bay Resort will be held June 17 from 11 am to 3 pm. It is hosted by the Balboa Bay Club and features custom, rare and classic cars for everyone to enjoy. Plus, there will be festivities for the whole family, including music, face painting, balloon artists, and drinks and BBQ for purchase. The Liberty Baptist Church will also hold a car show from 10 am to 12 pm located at 1000 Bison Ave, Newport Beach 92660.

Davey's Locker4 Go Deep Sea Fishing

Who hasn’t had their Pops regale them again and again with fishing tales; especially the time he caught a fish *this* big (which was apparently massive based on how far apart he was holding his hands). Give him a chance to show you a thing or two about casting a line and book a deep sea fishing excursion. Giant yellowtail, tuna, halibut, white sea bass and dozens more varieties swim off the shores of Newport Beach. Davey’s Locker in Newport Beach offers ½ day, ¾ day, and overnight fishing trips. A typical haul for the boat is hundreds of fish, so make room in your freezer for your catch of the day.

5 Get Some Exercise In or On the Water

It’s summer here in Newport, which is always a good excuse to jump in the water. Body board, boogey board, or grab your surf board and hit the waves. If it’s been awhile and you need a refresher course, book a lesson together at the Endless Sun Surf School. Or plan something a little more relaxed with a SUP board rental from Pirate Coast Paddle Company and enjoy the calm waters of the Newport Bay.

Pedego Newport Pier6 Cycle Along the Ocean Boardwalk

Head down to the beach and stop at the Newport Pier to rent an electric bike at Pedego. Cycle along the ocean boardwalk or book on of Pedego’s tours through Corona del Mar, Balboa Island, or the Newport Back Bay. You can even cap off your tour with a wine tasting at the Wine Gallery.

7 Have a Meal Fit for a King

Whatever you plan for your fun day out with Dad, start or end with a delicious meal. Many of Newport Beach’s fine establishments are hosting festive feasts to celebrate the man of the day. Make a reservation at Five Crowns for brunch, or tuck into a three-course steak dinner at Fleming’s. For more Father’s Day dining options in Newport Beach, see here.
