Where to Watch the Oscars in 2020
It’s the tail end of awards season, which culminates in the mothership of all ceremonies. That’s right. We’re talking about the most coveted of all award shows, the Academy Awards. (Sorry, Critics’ Choice Awards). It’s a night of glamour and who-wore-what. It might also be the day that your friends finally stop chattering about Joaquin Phoenix after he scoops up the famed Oscar gold. (Which he will, don’t you worry). If you have some catching up to do before the big day, there’s still some time left. Here, we raise the curtain on where to go to watch this year’s crop of nominees as well as the ceremony itself.
Where to watch Oscar-nominated movies
The Port Theater in CDM
If you haven’t seen Sam Mendes’ epic war film, 1917, now’s your chance—because that’s exactly what’s showing at The Port Theater in CDM. The Port is known for keeping things simple with just a single large-format screen showing one major flick at a time. That’s how it’s been ever since the historic theater first opened its doors back in 1949. Now, the renovated 11,000-square-foot space is home to a cocktail reception and seated dinner area, as well as an auditorium with side tables and recliners you’ll immediately want to sink into. Food and drinks (think: vino, cocktails, beer, an assortment of shareable plates and gourmet pizza) are served throughout screenings, so all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the show.
Regal Edwards Big Newport & RPX
Nestled in the San Miguel plaza just a stone’s throw away from Fashion Island, Regal Edwards has everything you need for a classic movie night experience. Think: plush leather recliners, upgraded large-format screens and a mountain of buttery, max-flavor popcorn. Here, you can check off many Oscar-nominated films off your list, as Regal is screening 1917, Ford v Ferrari, Parasite and Little Women (check screening times and days as they vary) leading up to the Oscars. Missed Joker when it first came out? They’re showing that, too. (Hint: you’ll find Best Picture nominees by looking for the prefix BP20 when buying your ticket online).
Where to watch the Academy Awards ceremony
“An Evening with Oscar” at the Pelican Hill Resort
Pull out your finest ball gowns and tuxedos because the Pelican Hill Resort is throwing an award-worthy Oscars viewing shindig. You’ll get a chance to wow on a red carpet upon arrival (photo op alert!) The folks at Pelican Grill will be whipping up themed specialty cocktails and a menu inspired by the year’s films. And all you popcorn lovers out there can rejoice. There will be bucketfuls of the good stuff for you to nervously munch on as they announce the winners. Speaking of winners—have you been bragging about how good you are at calling them? You’ll get a chance to put your clairvoyant abilities to good use and cast your ballot to possibly win dinner for two at Pelican Grill.
“A Night at The Oscars” at The Lot
You can watch a whole lot of movies—from edge-of-your-seat thrillers to dramas—at this luxury movie destination, which also houses a restaurant (and yes, they serve you delicious food and drink right to your leather recliner). But The Lot is pulling double-duty this year by hosting an Oscars viewing party. You’ll get to show off your glamorous garb as you walk down a red carpet. You’ll also get to test your film knowledge during an Oscars trivia game for a chance to snag an annual movie pass. Oh, and did we mention the food? A cocktail reception will kick off the event at 4 p.m., and that’ll be followed by a three-course dinner. (The whole affair will set you back $60).
