Spectacular Summer Fun in Newport Beach!


Yes, it’s that time again, when the days are longer, the evenings are warmer and the calendar is jam packed with activities, playful fun and sheer relaxation. A concert on the green, jazz under the stars, summer reading programs for the youngsters, it is all happening! And here I have a quick run-down of some of my faves!  Summer Fun… here we come!

ESPECIALLY FOR THE LITTLE ONES

Summer Reading Program Begins

Saturday, June 24th Sign Ups and Events Through August 12th
Sign up kids from K-6th grade in the Library’s Summer Reading Program. Kids spend time reading, enjoying shows and crafts and earning prizes. Check out the weekly fun calendar of events at each branch! Start the summer making music – singing, dancing and instrument playing with blues guitarist Brother Yusef. There will be a magic show with live doves and rabbits, sleight-of-hand, levitation and comedy. Calling all aspiring engineers! Kids can build structures from marshmallows, pasta, and boxes; and roads from paper and cardboard to race cars! There will even be live animals in the library? Cowboy Ken will brings to life the Old West art of trick roping, cowboy songs and pioneer stories.

MUSIC, ART & GARDENS

Art ExhibitionNewport Beach Art Exhibition
Saturday, June 17th
Mingle with the artists at a show featuring more than 200 works of art at this free event. Artists will exhibit and sell their paintings, mixed media, sculpture and photography. From 1:00 to 6:00pm in the Newport Beach Civic Center Community Room.  http://www.newportbeachca.gov/

Baroque Music Festival
June 18-25th
Hear historically stylistic interpretations of the great masterpieces of the Baroque period. The 37th annual festival features sounds of the British Isles. Enjoy a Wine and Waters reception following each performance. Various locations, including Sherman Library & Gardens. Tickets are $30-$50.

Summer Concert Series
June 16th thru October 6th
Held at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach, in an intimate outdoor amphitheater  for Friday nights under the stars. This year’s line-up includes some of the greats, and here just to name a few include: Brian McKnight, Gerald Albright & Jonathan Butler, Poncho Sanchez, Peter White, and Herb Albert & Lani Hall. Concerts on the Green

Concerts on the GreenSunday July 9, August 6 & September 3

The Newport Beach City Arts Commission presents another series of free “Concerts on the Green” 6:00- 7:30pm.  Guests bring low-slung beach chairs and a picnic dinner or purchase food from food trucks at the Civic Center to enjoy the concert atmosphere.

Sunset Jazz at Newport

Pacific Symphony Concert

Pirate Coast Paddling Glow Tours
June 16-September 4th
This is a unique way to enjoy a summer evening in Newport Beach. Hop on an LED light-adorned paddleboard or kayak and see marine life only visible at night on this fun excursion. Pirate Coast will lead nighttime tours on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00pm for $45 per person. Guests can enjoy cocktails and dinner at the nearby Back Bay Bistro. Kayak & Paddleboard Rentals
Daily

The Back Bay Newport Aquatic Center, Southwind Kayak Center, Sunset Kayak Rentals, Island Paddleboard and many others provide hourly rentals so visitors can get out there on the water and enjoy the sunshine, birds and nature.

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

OC Weekly’s Summer Fest
June 17th

Celebrate the beginning of summer with an epic party showcasing Orange County beach culture. Enjoy performances on a beach-side stage (bands include Pacific Dub, Wheeland Brothers and more) beer and drink booths, food trucks, vendors and a VIP cabana complete with a summer cocktail lounge and a food tasting tent. The Liquid Run
June 24-25th

This obstacle course will float entirely in water. Liquid Girls will be on-hand to take photos and help guests find their way to the liquid libations Beer Garden. DJs will be mixing tunes from the liquid pontoon boat and water beer pong contests will ensue. On land, enjoy food trucks, vendors and beach games. 9:00am to 5:00pm. Parking $10. July 4th

The biggest 4th of July celebration in Orange County will be right here at Newport Dunes! The all-day event is geared towards families seeking a safe holiday on a wave-less beach with plenty of activities for those of all ages. Enjoy live music by some of the top tribute bands, expanded aquatic park fun, VIP Beer & Wine Garden, Food Trucks accessible from the beach, and the region’s most spectacular fireworks display when the sun sets.

Lobsterfest at Newport Dunes
Sunday, August 6th                
Enjoy Maine Lobster flown in that morning, an incredible selection of steak and side dishes, and live entertainment! Hosted by the Lobsterfest Foundation, this Sunday event benefits two great programs: Leadership Tomorrow and the Make A Wish Foundation for Orange County. Newport Dunes from 3:00pm – 8:00pm. Pacific Wine & Food Classic
Saturday & Sunday, August 19 & 20th
Celebrate the ultimate food, wine and cocktail festival at Newport Dunes. Curated Cheese Takeover at SideDoor/Five Crowns
Wednesday’s- June 21st , July 19th & August 16th
Known for its award-winning cheese and charcuterie offerings, SideDoor is dedicating an evening to boutique cheese purveyors. June 21st will be Redwood Hill Farm Creamery, July 19 will be Willamette Valley Cheese Company, and August 16 will include four—these two, as well as Cowgirl and By George. Tracy Nelsen, SideDoor’s certified cheese monger, will lead an artisanal cheese tasting and discussion. The fun begins at 4:30pm with a five piece cheese board for $28.

Glitz, Glam & Giving—A Retro Hollywood Gala

Show off a glamorous side at a retro Hollywood gala at Island Hotel. Wednesday, June 28th

The featured band, DSB, is a group of world-class musicians highly revered as the next best thing to Journey.
